Personally, I have some difficulty understanding the opinion that 720p is acceptable at 7 or 8 inches. Every other device with a screen I own-iPhone, iPad, smartwatch, DSLR, TV-has a much higher resolution or ppi. Every time I pick up my Switch I immediately see pixels and think to myself, ‘Oh yeah, I have to deal with the blurry screen now.’ Now to be fair, I do have slightly better than 20/20 vision, and I have lost almost none of my near vision (objects are crystal clear to me 3 inches from my eye). Still, the idea of buying an 8 inch 720p screen in 2025 is a complete anathema to me and would be hugely disappointing for a ‘new’ device.

that's not how things work in this world , we're still on Windows 1.0 , they just changed the numbers to windows 11, put a little paint on it and called it a day wile asking 300 bucks for it back then ... don't expect TOO much from people , you'll be living in constant disappointment

No, 1080p isn't too much for a mobile chipset. The most important aspect of whether they go with 720p or 1080p depends on what the docked resolution will be. 1080p and 720p with 4X scale is 4k and 1440p respectively. A great visual for this is split-screen multiplayer, where each player's screen res would ideally be 1080p or 720p respectively on a native 4k screen. If the target is 4k with mostly upscaled games, with some indie and 1st party games running native 4k (yes it's doable. Devs/publishers that care enough will optimize their games), then the screen should be 1080p because it evenly scales into 4k. if the target is 1440p, 720p would be better because 720p evenly scales into 1440p.

At 8inch, 1080p should be the minimum. Keep in mind many non AAA games would have no problem hitting that resolution, as for big AAA games they could upscale from 540p to 1080p with DLSS and it would look better than native 720p

Wow moments for me - life action cutscenes in Realms of the Haunting + ingame graphics as well. French game called Deus with crazy amount of injuries yoz could get + healing them. Need for Speed High Stakes in 1999 - considered 'photorealistic' back then, cars with transparent breakable windows were big deal, graphics of waterfalls in the game was jaw dropping. But biggest leap in graphics have to be Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 with shaders, detailed textures, dynamic lighting and physics (and facial mimics in HL2). Since then graphics is moving forward slowly and HL2 still holds up till today, 20 years since release.

I’m not getting a PS5 pro. There’s no reason to get one. If the PS6’s big push is AI, I’ll be less likely to get it. I’d rather just let games run at a lower resolution/frame rate than do some AI bullshit to pad them.

DLSS, a better/bigger battery, and having low rumored clocks will allow them to output 1080p with decent battery life. The technology will be customized to what they want to do. If they're doing 1080p, it'll be fine. Most games will probably still run at 720p Natively and upscale from there.

900p which was a very popular resolution on the pc and even the standard switch for dock play. Might be worth trying to have that in

If you play PS2 games on a real PS2 on a CRT the games look stunning.

Just because even if it uses a 1080p screen that doesn't stop games from rendering at 720p and being upscaled to 1080p. It's all variable depending on the software being run.

It was ok. I’d give it a 5.5-6/10. Super hyped for mp4, Zelda looks bad imo, mario and luigi looks bad, and Idc about all the iphone games and old ports coming over, but MVC is hype news.

If the 8" LCD rumors are correct then I assume they're using the same panel as the PlayStation Portal. A good screen for sure, but even at 8" I think I would prefer a 720p OLED for all of the reasons mentioned.

i hope they go for an upscale from 540 or 680p into 1080p with dlss tech you could barely tell the difference on a small screen and the perf impact could be the same as running it at 720p in reality

If anything, it just shows confidence in their target for games going forward.

1600X900 is the ticket if they're concerned about 16X9 ratio on both handheld and docked. I personally think 1680x1050 on a 7.5-8.0 inch screen is perfect for quality and performance and 16X10 is a much better aspect ration on a handheld than 16X9.

720p is fine so long as all the games actually run at that. No more 540p BS

I think 900p is optimal at that pixel density. 1080 is unnecessary overhead.
